Psychological research from reputable sources demonstrates that mindfulness is a helpful tool in building and sustaining mental health. It is a key component in many evidence-based treatments for mental health conditions, including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Many people practice mindfulness through structured activity, like guided meditation, exercise, and a variety of expressive arts and see significant benefits. Mindfulness can be incorporated into any activity as long as the person can stay in the present moment and refrains from judgment.

Crafting allows people to distract their minds from emotional pain, feel productive, build self-esteem, and develop community, which are all commons goals many people voice when entering mental health treatment. There is an emerging body of research suggesting that crochet, a form of fiber arts that involves using a single hook to manipulate yarn, may have significant mental health and cognitive benefits. I’ve certainly found this to be true for me and for the patients who integrate this practice in their own lives.
